Introducing temporary chats and new data controls

To help you manage and remain in control of your data, we are introducing a new feature in Gemini Apps called Temporary Chat and updating your data controls in Gemini Apps activity.

• • Temporary Chats: With this new feature rolling out over the coming days, you’ll be able to quickly start a new chat with Gemini that won’t be used to personalize future chats or train models. Temporary chats also won’t appear in Recent Chats or Gemini Apps Activity. They’ll be saved for 72 hours so Gemini can respond to you and for safety purposes. Learn how to start a temporary chat.
• • Your uploads: We’re also updating our data handling practices for uploads. In the coming weeks, we’ll update the name of the Gemini Apps Activity setting on the Gemini Apps Activity page to “Keep Activity.” If this setting is on, you can see your past chats in Recent Chats and in Gemini Apps Activity and pick them up where you left off anytime. A subset of uploads submitted starting September 2—like files, videos, screens you ask about, and photos shared with Gemini—will also be used to help improve Google services for everyone. To stop this, you can turn off Keep Activity. You can also manage and delete your activity anytime. And, if your Gemini Apps Activity setting is currently off, your Keep Activity setting will remain off unless you turn it on.
• • Your Gemini audio and Gemini Live recordings: With this new setting rolling out in Gemini Apps Activity over the coming days, you can choose to improve Google services for everyone with your Gemini audio and Gemini Live recordings. Gemini audio includes audio collected when you click the microphone button. Gemini Live recordings include audio, video, and screenshares. This new setting is off by default, but you can turn it on anytime.

As before, when Google uses your activity to improve its services (including training generative AI models), it gets help from human reviewers. To protect your privacy, we disconnect chats from your account before sending them to service providers. In alignment with our privacy principles, we build technical data protections that safeguard and ensure the responsible use of data and provide you with tools to control your Gemini experience. With the rapid advancement of technology in recent years, online scams and fraud have emerged as serious threats to individuals and society that cannot be overlooked. While some argue that imposing stricter laws and harsher punishments is the most effective way to combat this problem, others believe it is better to protect society through education and awareness campaigns.. This essay will examine both perspectives before providing an explanation of why I consider education to be the most effective solution.

Advocates of tougher laws maintain that when punishments outweigh the potential benefits of scamming, individuals will be discouraged from committing fraud. By strictly enforcing harsher penalties, such as longer prison terms or even capital punishment for those who commit serious scams that lead to the death of victims or substantial financial losses, governments can create a strong deterrent effect. Furthermore, strict laws can strengthen public trust among citizens. Victims, in particular, will feel safer knowing that their government is committed to protecting them.

On the other hand, many believe that education and awareness campaigns are more practical and effective. Although imposing strict laws can also be beneficial, enforcing them on an international scale remains challenging, especially since many scams originate from countries with weak regulations. In such cases, bringing the perpetrators to justice is extremely difficult, if not impossible. Therefore, raising public awareness is an immediate and cost-effective solution. For instance, governments can collaborate with schools to educate people on how to protect themselves, providing guidelines such as checking whether a website is secure and recognizing warning signs of suspicious online activities.

In my opinion, stricter punishments are necessary; however, their effectiveness depends on international collaboration, which is extremely difficult to achieve and likely to be both costly and time-consuming. By contrast, education is a more practical solution, as it can be implemented through schools, the media, and social platforms.

In conclusion, while strong laws still play a vital role in deterring criminals from committing crimes that jeopardize their future, education and awareness campaigns offer a more immediate and sustainable solution. Therefore, governments should invest in both approaches while emphasizing that prevention through knowledge is always the best strategy.

4 Ways to Block Someone From Your YouTube Channel: Quick Guide

Are you trying to block someone on YouTube? Unfortunately, standard YouTube doesn't have the ability to actually block anyone—this feature is only available in YouTube Kids or shared teen experiences. However, there are a few workarounds so you don't have to see a particular channel or to make it so they can't comment on your videos. Keep reading to learn more.

While there is no official way to block a YouTube channel, there are a few workarounds: try marking the channel for removal from your recommendations, blocking on YouTube Kids, hiding the user from your channel, or using a third-party blocking plugin.

Removing Channel Recommendations

• 1. Go to the YouTube homepage.

  Unfortunately, there's no way to directly block a YouTube channel. The only way you can stop seeing another channel is to tell YouTube you don't want to see that channel's content anymore.

  You can do this on both desktop and mobile.

• 2. Press the three-dot icon next to a video in your recommended feed.

  You can only do this to videos in your recommended feed. You cannot do this in search or from a creator's page.

• 3. Select Don't recommend channel.

  The channel will no longer show up in your recommendations. However, this doesn't stop you from seeing the channel if you go to their page, or you may see that user comments on other videos as well.

YouTube Kids & Supervised Experiences

• 1. Go to the page of the YouTube user you want to block.

  This can only be done if you use YouTube Kids or have created a Shared Experience for your pre-teen. This can be done from your linked parent account or directly on your child's device.

• 2. Click ...more after the user's bio.

  On mobile, instead click the user's bio.

• 3. Click Report user.

  On mobile, click the three-dot icon in the upper-right corner.

• 4. Select Block channel for children.

  Click through the next few screens confirming that you want to block that user.

  If you want to unblock the channel at some point, simply go back to the user's page and return to the location of the Block button, which has now switched to an Unblock button

Hiding Users from Your Channel

• 1. Go to a YouTube user's page.

  While this isn't actually blocking a user, you can hide a user from your page so they can't comment on your videos or make clips of your livestreams.

• 2. Click ...more after the user's bio.

  On mobile, instead click the user's bio.

• 3. Click Report user.

  On mobile, click the three-dot icon in the upper-right corner.

• 4. Select Hide user from my channel.

  This user's comments on your video won't show anymore. If you want to see who you've hidden or show their comments, go to YouTube Studio > Settings > Community. Hidden users will be displayed under the "Automated Filters" section.
